Unlike thin mesh-style rug pads, our underlay is made from 10mm bonded foam carpet underlay, providing a substantial layer of cushioning beneath your rug.

We cut the underlay to suit your selected rug size and apply the double-sided tape before dispatch, so most of the preparation is already done for you.

When your order arrives, simply position the underlay and rug, remove the protective paper from the tape and press the rug into position.

Cut Smaller Than Your Rug – On Purpose

Our rug underlay is cut approximately 8–10cm shorter in both length and width than the corresponding rug size.

For example, if you select an underlay for a standard-sized rug, the underlay will sit inside the perimeter rather than finishing directly at the rug edge.

We do this deliberately.

The smaller underlay helps keep it hidden beneath the rug and creates a more gradual transition from the 10mm cushioning to the outside edges of the rug.

After installation, allow some time for the rug and underlay to settle. The edges of the rug will generally relax and lie flatter after being rolled for transport.

Double-Sided Tape Already Applied

Before dispatch, Carpet Capers applies strips of double-sided tape to the top of the underlay.

The protective release paper remains on the tape during delivery.

You don’t remove this paper until the rug and underlay are positioned where you want them.

Because the underlay is rolled for transport, some of the tape may appear slightly wrinkled when unpacked.

This is generally nothing to be concerned about and does not necessarily affect its ability to adhere.

How to Install Your Rug Underlay

1. Unroll the underlay and allow it to relax and flatten before installation.
2. Position the underlay where you would like your rug to sit.
3. Place the rug over the underlay, leaving an even border around the underlay.
4. Check that you’re happy with the final position before exposing the adhesive.
5. Roll back a small section of the rug.
6. Remove the protective paper from the first section of double-sided tape.
7. Roll the rug back into position and press it firmly onto the tape.
8. Continue gradually along the rug, removing the release paper as you go.
9. Once complete, smooth the rug into position.
10. Allow approximately 48 hours for the rug and underlay to relax fully after being rolled for delivery.

Best Suited to Hard Flooring

We have tested this rug underlay ourselves in a home environment on both tiled floors and carpeted floors.

Our testing found that it worked best on hard flooring, with minimal movement experienced on tiles.

When used with a rug over existing carpet, some rug movement can still occur. For this reason, we primarily recommend this product for suitable hard-floor applications.

Important Information About Rug Types

Double-sided tape needs a suitable rug backing to adhere effectively.

For this reason, the product may not be suitable for some natural-fibre, hand-woven or specialist rugs.

If you have an expensive, handmade, delicate or unusual rug, we recommend checking with the rug manufacturer before applying adhesive tape to its backing.

Underlay Colour May Vary

We occasionally change our carpet underlay supplier depending on availability.

Different manufacturers use different colours and surface finishes on their bonded foam underlays.

For this reason, the colour and appearance of the underlay you receive may differ from the photographs shown on this page.

Protecting Your Flooring

Rugs, furniture and other items that cover a floor for extended periods can result in differences in colour where surrounding flooring is exposed to UV light.
